Hildur Guðnadóttir performs on an electric cello made by Hans Jóhannsson in the context of Manchester University’s department of electric and electronic engineering.
The work, carried out in partnership with Patrick Gaydecki, professor of digital signal processing, aims to digitally manipulate the raw waveform of the bowed string instruments using sophisticated signal processing hardware and codecs developed by Gaydecki. The hardware is embedded in the instruments.
The specific cello that Guðnadóttir will play is at an intermediary development stage, and a working violin prototype may also be ready in time for the festival.
