HISTORY APPARATUS

site-specific installation
tree, earth

A stump of an old tree is placed on the terrace of the Neue Nationalgalerie. Suggesting that a tree once grew in that location, the stump creates a false history. Too old to actually be part of this or any modern building, the tree only exists as a sculpture in thought, in imagined space. As it takes shape in the viewer’s mind, the full, imagined tree grows into a means to falsify or write history – a fictitious or potential history. The stump is the impossible trace of an unnatural object.
