DEVIOUS CORNERS

basalt

A small amount of basalt, melted in a process that mimics its geological origins, is pulled into fibres. This stone, abundant in the earth and many other planets, still maintains an almost elemental quality even when molten and unrecognizable as basalt. In this site-specific installation, barely visible lines scratch space, subtly destabilizing architecture – yet defining it and the ways one orients towards it. As time passes, the basalt fragments become increasingly intertwined with their surroundings.

This work was first created for An Kaler’s performance series On Orientations- Untimely Encounters.
