DER FREIE GRUNDRISS

fly in a cocoon, contract in a frame

Der freie Grundriss engages the common housefly in co-producing a piece of art, entitling the fly to be a flying sculpture. A pupated fly maggot is placed inside a small hole in one of the temporary tree pillars that are part of the David Chipperfield exhibition Sticks and Stones at the Neue Nationalgalerie.

Der freie Grundriss is the fly’s performative act of hatching from its cocoon and the hole. Afterwards it will fly freely through the museum without any limitations by the institution or its staff. It is invited to interact with other artworks.

Joachim Jäger, head of the Neue Nationalgalerie, agreed by contract to treat the fly as a living artwork.
