DEVIOUS CORNERS

basalt

A small amount of basalt, melted in a process that mimics its geological origins, is pulled into fibres. This stone, abundant in the earth and many other planets, still maintains an almost elemental quality even as, molten, it becomes unrecognisable as basalt. In this site-specific installation, lines barely visible scratch space, subtly destabilising the architecture defining it and the ways one orients oneself to it. As time passes, the basalt fibers becomes increasingly intertwined with its surroundings.

This work was first created for An Kaler’s performance series On Orientations.
