Installation
On the terrace of the Neue Nationalgalerie stands a sculpture made of oak trees, willow trees, and fruit trees by Andreas Greiner and Violeta Burckhardt. The trees are from a nearby nursery. Because they have grown crooked, they are considered nonstandard and unsalable; normally, they would be destroyed.
This raises fundamental ecological questions: What is the value of biodiversity apart from economic utility? What happens to things that deviate from the norm? And what does that say about our relationship to nature?
In front of Mies van der Rohe’s iconic building, trees break the pattern. Where urban development meets standardisation, they silently stand for diversity, resistance, and different growth. Raised for temporary urban greening, they have been placed on a hill made of construction debris for the festival and will live on afterward at Schlossgut Schwante Sculpture Park.

Auf der Terrasse der Neuen Nationalgalerie steht die aus Eichen, Weiden und Obstbäumen bestehende Skulptur von Andreas Greiner und Violeta Burckhardt. Die Bäume stammen aus einer nahen Baumschule. Mit ihrem krummen Wuchs sind sie nicht normkonform und gelten als unverkäuflich – normalerweise würden sie vernichtet.
Zentrale ökologische Fragen rücken in den Fokus: Welchen Wert hat biologische Vielfalt jenseits wirtschaftlicher Verwertbarkeit? Was passiert mit dem, was aus der Norm fällt? Und was sagt das über unser Verhältnis zur Natur aus?
Vor dem ikonischen Mies-van-der-Rohe-Bau brechen die Bäume aus dem Raster aus. Wo Städtebau auf Standardisierung trifft, stehen sie leise für Vielfalt, Widerstand und anderes Wachstum. Gezüchtet für temporäre Stadtbegrünung, wurden sie für das Festival auf einem Hügel aus Bauschutt platziert, um später im Skulpturenpark Schlossgut Schwante überleben zu können.
