Clara Jo’s Ash and Salt traces the journey of a single material – clay – from riverbed to a coral reef in Fiji. Through a combination of documentation, poetic narration, and speculative 3D animation, it investigates the spread of stories and materials as manifestations of ecological and cultural resilience.

The piece centres around a community-based project that aims to fabricate ceramic reef structures, fire them, and return them to the ocean. The focus is on the close connection between land and sea, local knowledge, and intergenerational care.

Transcending European climate narratives, the film opens up a relational perspective that questions extractive practices and their portrayal in the media –and that invites us to reconsider our climate’s future.

Ash and Salt von Clara Jo verfolgt die Reise eines einzigen Materials – Ton – vom Flussbett bis zum Korallenriff auf Fidschi. Die Verbindung aus Dokumentation, poetischer Erzählung und spekulativer 3D-Animation untersucht die Verbreitung von Geschichten und Materialien als Ausprägungen ökologischer und kultureller Resilienz.

Im Zentrum steht ein gemeinschaftsbasiertes Projekt, bei dem keramische Riffstrukturen hergestellt, gebrannt und ins Meer zurückgeführt werden. Die enge Verbindung von Land und Ozean, lokales Wissen und generationsübergreifende Fürsorge werden in den Fokus gerückt.

Jenseits europäischer Klimanarrative eröffnet der Film eine relationale Perspektive, die extraktive Praktiken und deren mediale Repräsentation hinterfragt – und dazu einlädt, die Zukunft des Klimas neu zu denken.
