Hanging just inside the entrance to the Neue Nationalgalerie is a restored model of Frank Oehring’s futuristic light sculpture, the original of which can be found in the ICC Berlin. The ICC, designed by Ralf Schüler and Ursulina Schüler-Witte and opened in 1979, remains one of the biggest conference centres in the world to this day. It was closed in 2014 and listed as a historic building in 2016. Its future is uncertain.

The sculpture, also known as the ‘brain’of the ICC, combined art and technology into an interactive way-finding system. It was an early manifestation of the idea of an intelligent, interactive environment. Thanks to the work of curator Lutz Henke, the model is being shown for the first time at Festival of Future Nows, together with drawings and a minimalistic, modular architecture of square aluminium tubing designed in collaboration with Gonzalez Haase and AAS.

Im Eingangsbereich der Neuen Nationalgalerie hängt das restaurierte Modell von Frank Oehrings futuristischer Lichtplastik – im Original noch heute im ICC Berlin zu finden. Dieses Kongresszentrum, von Ralf Schüler und Ursulina Schüler-Witte entworfen und 1979 eröffnet, gehört bis heute weltweit zu den größten seiner Art. Es wurde 2014 geschlossen und steht seit 2016 unter Denkmalschutz. Seine Zukunft ist ungewiss.

Die Lichtplastik – auch als „Gehirn“ des ICC bezeichnet – verband als interaktives Wegeleitsystem Kunst und Technologie. Sie spiegelte bereits damals den Gedanken einer intelligenten, interaktiven Umgebung wider. Zum Festival of Future Nows wird das Modell dank Unterstützung des Kurators Lutz Henke erstmals gezeigt, ergänzt durch Zeichnungen und eine minimalistische Architektur aus modularen Aluminium-Quadratrohren, entwickelt in Kooperation mit Gonzalez Haase und AAS.
