Calls for Action – Southern Amazon Rainforest, Brazil, 2024-2025

Installation

At the Neue Nationalgalerie, Julian Charrière has opened a window onto the Brazilian Amazon. Visitors can see and hear the rainforest via livestream – and from a phone box on the terrace, they can ‘talk’ to it too. Special microphones record the sonic landscape of the forest, and callers’ voices are transmitted back at the frequency of birdsong.

Calls for Action is a participatory project realised in collaboration with Art into Acres, Re:wild, and local partners. It demonstrates how art can help local initiatives protect threatened ecosystems and indigenous land rights. This iteration connects Neue Nationalgalerie with the Refúgio de Vida Silvestre dos Rios São Benedito e Azul in the southern Amazon region. It supports the protection of 3.7 million acres of indigenous lands that are home to tapirs, squirrel monkeys, and jaguars.

In der Neuen Nationalgalerie öffnet Julian Charrière ein Fenster zum brasilianischen Amazonas. Die Besucher*innen können per Livestream den Regenwald sehen, hören – und über eine Telefonzelle auf der Terrasse mit dem Wald „sprechen“. Spezielle Mikrofone nehmen die Klanglandschaft des Waldes auf, während die Stimmen der Anrufer*innen als Vogelsang-Frequenz in den Wald übertragen werden.

Calls for Action ist ein partizipatives Projekt, das in Zusammenarbeit mit Art into Acres, Re:wild und lokalen Partner*innen realisiert wird. Es zeigt, wie Kunst heute lokale Initiativen beim Schutz bedrohter Ökosysteme und indigener Landrechte unterstützen kann. Diese Ausgabe verbindet die Neue Nationalgalerie mit dem Refúgio de Vida Silvestre dos Rios São Benedito e Azul im südlichen Amazonas. Sie unterstützt den Schutz von 1,5 Millionen Hektar indigener Gebiete, die Tapiren, Totenkopfäffchen und Jaguaren eine Heimat bieten.
