Installation

This installation brings a piece of the forest into the Neue Nationalgalerie. A living tree with a patch of forest floor is surrounded by a transparent PVC membrane attached to a metal framework. Air flows in through a respirator at regular intervals, causing the membrane to gently rise and fall, resembling the rhythmic movement of a huge lung. Lungetræ makes the tree’s breathing tangible, translating the otherwise invisible interchange between it and its environment into physical motion.

With this piece, Rune Bosse points to a possible future in which machines might be necessary to keep trees alive so that they in turn can keep us alive – a present or future in which we are dependant on machines as well as trees.

Installation

Diese Installation holt ein Stück Wald in die Neue Nationalgalerie. Ein lebender Baum samt Waldboden ist von einer transparenten PVC-Membran umgeben, die an einem Metallgestell befestigt ist. Über einen Respirator strömt in regelmäßigen Abständen Luft ins Innere, wodurch sich die Membran sanft hebt und senkt. Das erinnert an die rhythmische Bewegung einer überdimensionalen Lunge. Lungetræ macht die Atmung des Baumes greifbar und übersetzt den sonst unsichtbaren Austausch mit der Umwelt in eine physische Bewegung.

Mit der Arbeit weist Rune Bosse auf eine mögliche Zukunft hin, in der Maschinen erforderlich sein könnten, um Bäume am Leben zu erhalten, die wiederum uns am Leben erhalten. Eine Gegenwart oder Zukunft, in der wir sowohl von den Maschinen als auch von den Bäumen abhängig sind.
