Installation
For Globes, Sophie Pompéry has transplanted the display window of a map store into the Neue Nationalgalerie in the form of a life-size light box. The two large-scale photographs mounted on it depict the closed shop at night. In these long exposures, the illuminated globes are completely blown out, so that the Earth glows a uniform white. In its light, the shop’s technical equipment becomes visible as well.
Maps are tools of thought – but what exactly is being mapped here? An incandescent celestial body? What seems clearly defined and objective today can be quickly unravelled by historical, political, and climatic change. The seemingly static is revealed in the long run to be in a fragile state.

Für Globes hat Sophia Pompéry das Schaufenster eines Kartenladens im Maßstab 1:1 als Lichtbox in die Nationalgalerie übertragen. Auf zwei darauf angebrachten großformatigen Fotografien ist das geschlossene Fachgeschäft im Dunkeln zu sehen. Die Langzeitbelichtung der Leuchtgloben setzt alles auf Null und lässt die Erde homogen weiß erstrahlen. In ihrem Licht werden auch die technischen Armaturen des Ladens sichtbar.
Karten sind Werkzeuge des Denkens – aber was wird hier eigentlich kartiert? Ein glühender Himmelskörper? Das, was heute klar umrissen und objektiv zu sein scheint, kann sich durch historische, politische und klimatische Veränderungen schnell auflösen. Scheinbar Statisches entpuppt sich auf lange Sicht als im fragilen Zustand befindlich.
