Installation & Performance
On the terrace of the Neue Nationalgalerie, Tímea Anita Oravecz presents a large labyrinth made of sand. The artist sees this temporary installation as a modern-day agora, a place of dialogue, and reflection. The motif is taken from a Byzantine-era mosaic from Gaza (ca. 5th–7th century CE). The winding ribbon and symmetrical cross represent the interpenetration of different systems of ordering principles – for example, space and time. Such patterns are used as spiritual maps and protective symbols around the world.
The Knot of Time reflects the search for peace and community, not just between Israel and Palestine, but worldwide and across eras. During the performance, the knot slowly comes undone as visitors follow the labyrinth’s paths. Their steps erase the ancient pattern, and the sands merge into a new unity.

Auf der Terrasse der Neuen Nationalgalerie präsentiert Tímea Anita Oravecz ein großformatiges Labyrinth aus Sand. Die Künstlerin versteht die temporäre Installation als eine moderne Agora – einen Ort des Dialogs und der Reflexion. Das Motiv beruht auf einem Mosaik aus Gaza (5.–7. Jh. n. Chr. byzantinischer Zeit). Das verschlungene Band und das symmetrische Kreuz versinnbildlichen die Durchdringung verschiedener Ordnungssysteme – etwa von Raum und Zeit. Solche Muster dienen weltweit als spirituelle Karten und Schutzsymbole.
The Knot of Time reflektiert die Suche nach Frieden und Gemeinschaft, nicht nur zwischen Israel und Palästina, sondern weltweit und die Zeiten übergreifend. Während einer Performance löst sich der Knoten langsam auf, wenn die Besucher*innen den Linien des Labyrinths folgen. Ihre Schritte verwischen das uralte Muster, und die beiden Sande verschmelzen zu einer neuen Einheit.
