Shanghai’s city walls were built in the middle of the 16th century and largely destroyed in the first third of the 20th century. It is said that the precious masonry stones were later reused for the construction of residential buildings. Due to the fast disappearance of historical architecture resulting from Shanghai’s current expansion policies, this masonry has become a precious souvenir. The artist documents these and further historical places threatened by development and drastic urban renewal, including the iconic Shanghai Slaughterhouse. Designed by the English architect Balfours in 1933, it was the first slaughter house in East Asia. Since being renovated and modernized with steel and glass, it has become an urban leisure and entertainment complex. Historical traces survive in the umbrella-shaped concrete supports of the imported British cement, the marble and the ornamental details of the facade.

Shanghais Stadtmauern wurden Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts erbaut und im ersten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts größtenteils zerstört. Es heißt, dass die kostbaren Mauersteine für den Bau von Wohnhäusern wiederverwendet wurden. Da diese aufgrund von Shanghais aktueller Renovierungspolitik derzeit im Verschwinden begriffen sind, bilden die Mauersteine ein kostbares Souvenir. Diese und andere historisch gewachsene Orte, die vom Verschwinden bedroht sind oder Zeitzeugen der Veränderung sind, hält die Künstlerin mit ihrer Kamera fest. So etwa das „Shanghai Slaughterhouse“, das 1933 vom englischen Architekten Balfours entworfen wurde und als erstes modernes Schlachthaus im „Fernen Osten“ galt. Heute ist es renoviert und mit seiner modernen Architektur aus Stahl und Glas hat es sich zu einem urbanen Freizeit- und Unterhaltungskomplex gewandelt, doch die historischen Spuren sind noch erkennbar: schirmförmige Betonstützen, die mit einst importiertem britischen Zement gebaut wurden oder der Marmor, der in den ornamentreichen Fassadendetails erhalten blieb.
