Installation
Hope & BAU is a skull-sized device with a globe screen. It displays scenarios, images, and data reflecting the state and progression of the Earth’s climate. The device is a living-room object – much like a clock that displays time, this ‘climatedex’ shows our current position in forecasts, models, and measurements as they creep along in their grinding, obfuscating, and decennial pace.
Unlike time, which we can predict, looking into the future of the Earth’s climate leaves an eerie uncertainty, an uncertainty rooted in the dynamics of our ability to adapt. BAU is the ‘Business-as-Usual’ scenario. Within such a context of hope and doubt in humanity, and a fear of a future indiscriminate violence of nature, the device displays a status quo, a state of affairs.

Hope & BAU von Simen Musæus ist ein Gerät von der Größe eines Schädels, das einen gebogenen Bildschirm besitzt. Er zeigt Szenen, Bilder und Daten, die den Zustand und das Voranschreiten des Erdklimas wiedergeben. Das Gerät ist ein Gegenstand fürs Wohnzimmer – ähnlich einer Uhr, die die Zeit anzeigt, zeigt uns dieses „Klimadatenbuch“ unseren aktuellen Standpunkt in Prognosen, Modellen und Messungen, die sich in ihrem zermürbenden, verwirrenden und jahrzehntelangen Tempo dahinschleppen.
Anders als die Zeit, die wir vorhersagen können, hinterlässt der Blick in die Zukunft des Erdklimas eine gespenstische Unsicherheit, die in den Dynamiken unserer Anpassungsfähigkeit wurzelt. BAU ist das Business-as-usual-Szenario. In diesem Kontext von Hoffnung und Zweifel an der Menschheit und der Angst vor einer Zukunft voller willkürlicher Gewalt der Natur zeigt das Gerät einen Status quo an, einen Sachverhalt.
